RENTON -- Jamal Adams will miss a third straight game for the Seahawks due to a groin injury.
Adams was injured in Seattle's win over the Dallas Cowboys last month and has been unable to return to the practice field ever since. The team had an additional practice this week on Monday as they returned from their bye week and Adams was not able to take part in any of the sessions during the week. He was officially ruled out by the team on Friday.
Without Adams, the Seahawks will again turn to the tandem of Ryan Neal and Damarious Randall to handle the strong safety role against the Cardinals. Neal will get his third start in place of Adams at the position. Meanwhile, Randall was fully promoted from the practice squad earlier this week after appearing in the last two games as a temporary practice squad call-up.
Carroll said that Adams is likely to be able to return to practice next week but that they decided to be cautious with the injury.
"He's really close," Carroll said. "We want to make sure and get it right and the consensus is it's better to wait until next week. I anticipate that he will be practicing next week. We couldn't get him out there. We hoped to and we wanted to but we couldn't get him out so we're going to leave him home and take care of it, one more good weekend of rehab and prep and try to get him ready to come out next week.
Despite having 16 players listed on the injury report throughout the week, Adams and guard Mike Iupati are the only ones listed on the final status report.
Iupati is listed as questionable to play due to a back injury that kept him sidelined in practice on Thursday. It's the same issue that kept him out of the team's last game against the Minnesota Vikings.
Carroll indicated that Iupati is still struggling to get through the issue, which could mean another start for Jordan Simmons at left guard this weekend.
"He struggled this week some," Carroll said. "He was uncomfortable a couple days. We have to see how he is by the weekend and all of that. Next week we've got to get Mike to where he's healed and he's returned fully because it has nagged him a little bit. So I am a little concerned about that."
Carroll himself is dealing with a knee issue as he recovers from arthroscopic surgery last week. Carroll used a golf cart to get around at practice on Thursday and had a cane as well as a overturned trash can to sit on during practice on Friday.
"I had to wait for a scope opportunity on the bye week and my rehab was going really well and then, if you can imagine this, I overdid it a little bit too much," Carroll said. "Not that I wasn't warned from everybody that knows me and that was here that I'm probably going to do that. I guess I wanted them to feel good about them calling the shots and they were all right and I went too far, too fast. I took a little step back."
Carroll said the issue won't affect his ability to coach from the sidelines on Sunday.
"I'll be fine. I'll be there no problem," he said.
Defensive tackle Damon Harrison will not be a part of the team's roster this weekend as he continues to ramp up on the practice squad.
"He's making progress," Carroll said. "We're on a schedule to see... we're just going to go one week at a time. We're going to leave him home this week to continue to work and do all the work he's doing, rehab and conditioning stuff. He's still on the road back."
A big run-stopping defensive tackle may also not be the biggest priority for Seattle in the matchup against the Cardinals either as they spread the field often with their personnel packages.
