Mariners make 14 moves, set projected opening day roster

PEORIA, Ariz. -- The Seattle Mariners have made their final roster moves to set their roster for opening day in Houston.

With 14 final moves, the roster has been paired down to 25. The roster is still preliminary as the roster isn't due to the league until 9 a.m. on Sunday and could still be subject to change.

But barring any unforeseen circumstance, the final roster was reached with the following roster moves.

Left-handed pitcher Ariel Miranda was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma. Outfielder Ben Gamel and catcher Tuffy Gosewisch were optioned to Triple-A Tacoma and right-handed pitcher Jonathan Aro, left-handed pitcher Dean Kiekhefer, infielders Tyler Smith and Mike Freeman, and catcher Nevin Ashley were reassigned to minor league camp.

Additionally, six players were placed on the disabled list: right-handed pitchers Steve Cishek (left hip labrum surgery recovery), Shae Simmons (right elbow strain), Rob Whalen (right shoulder inflammation) and Tony Zych (right shoulder biceps tendon surgery recovery), left-handed pitcher Drew Smyly (left arm flexor strain) and infielder Shawn O'Malley (appendectomy recovery).

The moves mean that infielder Taylor Motter, outfielder Guillermo Heredia, right-handed pitcher Casey Fien and left-handed pitchers James Pazos and Dillon Overton were among the final few players to earn roster spots with the team.
